CFO as a Service

Your external CFO: more than figures

With CFO as a Service, you get accounting, financial analysis and strategic advice the way a CFO provides them, but flexibly and externally. It is designed for SMEs and growing companies without a finance department of their own.

We agree the scope and rhythm together before we start.

What CFO as a Service meansThe term is used in different ways. This is how we understand it, including the part that matters just as much: what it does not mean.

A finance chief for a set time and to measure

You buy in the role, not the position: planning, liquidity, reporting and the preparation of decisions. We agree in advance how many days a month this takes. Most of the time, it starts at half a day.

Looking ahead instead of back

Accounting answers what happened. A CFO answers what follows from it for the next 12 months: is there enough liquidity for the investment, what do we really earn our money with, what will the bank say.

With access to your real figures

Not a consultant who brings a presentation once a quarter. We work with the current figures from your accounts and, if we keep them anyway, without any preparation in between.

What it is not

Not management consulting with a slide deck and not asset management. And not a substitute for your management: we work through the options and tell you what we recommend. The decision is yours.

When an external CFO pays offGrowth without a finance department, a major decision, figures that say nothing or a bank that asks for documents.

Growth without a finance department

Your revenue is rising, but a CFO position of your own does not pay off yet.

Before a major decision

Investment, acquisition, succession or financing round, and nobody works it out properly.

Figures that say nothing

You have accounts, but no answer to the question of what you really earn your money with.

The bank is missing documents

A budget, a projected income statement and a liquidity plan are required, and nobody in-house prepares them.

External or employed? At some point the question arises whether to hire someone. Six points on which this is decided, including what speaks for hiring your own.

What it costs

External CFO

A fixed monthly amount for the agreed scope. Adjustable up and down.

Your own hire

A six-figure annual salary plus social benefits, bonus, workplace and training.

When it pays off

External CFO

Immediately. You only pay for the days you need.

Your own hire

When there is permanently enough work for a full position or a good half one.

Presence and availability

External CFO

Digital and independent of location. There at fixed appointments and reachable at short notice when something cannot wait. We come to your premises when something can only be resolved on site.

Your own hire

In the building every day and part of the team, this person also picks up what never ends up in a figure.

An outside view

External CFO

Remains. We see many businesses and compare without meaning to.

Your own hire

Gets lost over time. Anyone who has been inside for a long time mistakes habits for laws.

When the person leaves

External CFO

We provide the cover. The documents are in your system anyway.

Your own hire

Knowledge leaves with them, and finding a successor takes months.

Who it suits

External CFO

SMEs with CHF 1 to 10 million in revenue that want to work out their decisions properly.

Your own hire

Businesses from around CHF 20 million in revenue or with their own finance department.

When it takes more than figuresIn addition to the CFO mandate: a seat on the board of directors and sparring before decisions.

Board mandate

A seat on the board of directors with an accounting background, also as a person with signing authority who is resident in Switzerland, for owners living abroad. From CHF 5,000 per year.

Sparring before decisions

Investment, succession, bank meeting or financing round: we work through the options before you decide.

Pricing

Three scopes, one fixed monthly amount

How much time it takes depends on your business. That is why we agree the scope and rhythm in the initial meeting, before anything starts. The amounts cover the CFO work; the ongoing accounting runs separately through outsourced accounting. All prices excl. VAT.

That is how far the rolling liquidity planning we maintain reaches.

The entry price is CHF 600 because the scope is clearly limited. CFO Basic is monthly reporting with a quarterly meeting, not a finance chief 2 days a week. As soon as a budget, rolling liquidity planning and monthly meetings are added, we are at CFO Plus and above. And what these amounts do not include is the ongoing accounting: we keep it as outsourced accounting and charge for it separately. What your amount covers is set out in writing before the first month starts.

Process

How a CFO mandate gets started

Three steps. The second is the most time-consuming and happens once; after that, everything runs at the agreed rhythm.

  1. Assessment and scope

We look at the last two sets of annual accounts, the current figures and your open questions. Afterwards, both sides know whether and for what you need us. Which reports, at what intervals, discussed with whom: all this is set out in writing before the first monthly fee is due.

  2. Setting up

Defining key figures, preparing the budget and the projected income statement, building the liquidity plan. This is the most time-consuming part, and it happens once.

  3. Ongoing rhythm

Monthly or quarterly reporting, budget versus actual comparison, discussion. Reachable in between when a decision is coming up.

Meeting in the office: a printed report with charts lies on the table, and someone is taking notes next to it

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

What is CFO as a Service, exactly?

You buy in the role of a finance chief instead of filling the position. We take care of planning, liquidity management, reporting and the preparation of decisions, to the extent your business needs, and for a fixed monthly amount. The terms ‘external CFO’, ‘fractional CFO’ or ‘interim CFO’ are also common; at heart they mean the same thing, although an interim mandate usually bridges a gap and ours is designed for the long term.

What does an external CFO cost in Switzerland?

With us, a CFO mandate starts at CHF 600 per month, CFO Plus at CHF 1,200. The entry price is this low because the scope is clearly limited: CFO Basic means monthly reporting with key figures and a quarterly meeting, not a finance chief 2 days a week. As soon as a budget, rolling liquidity planning and monthly meetings are added, we are in the CFO Plus range and above. One important point: these are pure CFO amounts. The ongoing accounting is not included; it runs through outsourced accounting and is charged separately. We agree the scope in advance, so that it is clear what the amount covers.

From what company size is it worthwhile?

It depends less on size than on whether decisions are coming up that someone should work through properly. In our experience, this starts from revenue of around one million, or when a bank asks for a budget and a projected income statement. Below that, good reporting from outsourced accounting is usually enough.

External CFO or our own hire: which suits us?

That depends above all on how much work arises permanently. An external CFO costs a fixed monthly amount for the agreed scope and pays off immediately, because you only pay for the days you need. Hiring your own means a six-figure annual salary plus social benefits, bonus, workplace and training, and it pays off when there is permanently enough work for a full position or a good half one. In return, an employee is in the building every day and also picks up what never ends up in a figure. The external CFO suits SMEs with CHF 1 to 10 million in revenue that want to work out their decisions properly; your own hire suits businesses from around CHF 20 million in revenue or with their own finance department.

How quickly can you start?

We usually carry out the assessment within 2 weeks. If you need documents for a bank or an investor at short notice, tell us in the initial meeting; we then give that priority and clarify the rest afterwards.

How do you handle confidentiality?

We are contractually bound to confidentiality, beyond the end of the mandate; this is set out in section 3 of our general terms and conditions (AGB). We process personal data in accordance with the revised Federal Act on Data Protection (revDSG). Your figures stay in your systems; we work in them with our own access. For mandates in the same industry, we check beforehand whether there is a conflict of interest, and we decline if there is one.

How much time do you invest per month?

That depends on the mandate. Many start with half a day per month for reporting and discussion and scale up when a project comes up. We agree the framework in advance.

Do you also need our accounting for this?

Not necessarily, but it helps. If we keep the ongoing accounts, the figures are up to date and we do not first have to prepare them. Otherwise, we work with your existing reports.

Do you also attend board meetings?

If you wish, yes, as a guest or as an elected member. We prepare the financial documents and explain them so that non-specialists also understand the consequences.

How does this differ from normal accounting advice?

In the direction it looks. Accounting looks back and makes sure that everything is correctly booked and declared. CFO services look ahead: what do these figures mean for the next 12 months, and what decision follows from them?
